What the free lookup can and can’t tell you

The free lookup shows the caller ID name the phone company has filed for the number. That’s often the account holder, a business, or nothing at all, and it can be out of date after a number changes hands. It isn’t a verified identity, and we don’t present it as one.

Verifying who someone is

For things that matter, like renting a home, lending money or selling something big, the full report matches the number to a person and shows their name, current address and FICO® Score 4. Because it includes credit data, the law (the Fair Credit Reporting Act) requires a permissible purpose: usually the person’s written consent or their application. You confirm that before the report unlocks.

What isn’t allowed

Using credit data to look someone up out of curiosity, to find an ex, or for anything without a permissible purpose isn’t allowed, and we don’t sell reports for it. The caller ID name check is fine for anyone.

Questions

Is the caller ID name the owner’s name?

Often it’s the account holder, but not always: it may be a business, a family member who pays the bill, a previous owner, or blank.

Can I get an address from a phone number for free?

No. An address comes with the full report, which needs a permissible purpose.

What counts as a permissible purpose?

The most common are the person’s written consent, a credit or rental application they made, or a business transaction they started. See our compliance page.
