What “reverse lookup” means here

A normal phone book goes from a name to a number. A reverse lookup goes the other way: you have the number and want to know what’s behind it. Our free version answers from the phone network’s own records: the caller ID name filed for the line, the carrier that serves it now, the kind of line it is and the area it was assigned to.

Free sites that promise a name and address

Many “free” reverse lookup sites show a teaser, then ask for a subscription before showing anything. Others show names scraped from old listings that may be years out of date. We keep the free part honest: what you see is what the network has on file, with no paywall halfway through. When you need a verified identity, current address and credit score, the full report does that, with a permissible purpose.

Reading the results

  • A business name usually means a company line or a call center.
  • “Wireless caller” or no name is normal for cell phones. It doesn’t mean the number is fake.
  • VoIP numbers come from internet phone services. Plenty are legitimate, but they’re also what most robocallers use.
  • Not a working number means the number isn’t in service. That lookup is free.

Questions

Is a reverse phone lookup legal?

Yes. Looking up caller ID and carrier information for a number is legal. Using credit data is different: the full report requires a permissible purpose under the Fair Credit Reporting Act.

Why didn’t I get a name?

Many numbers, especially cell phones, have no caller ID name on file. The carrier and line type still tell you a lot about who might be calling.

How current is the carrier?

The carrier is checked when you look the number up, so a number moved to another company shows its current carrier.

Can I do more than three a day?

Yes, with a membership: Basic includes 100 caller ID lookups a month and Platinum 1,000, then they’re 5¢ each.
