Where caller ID names come from

When a call reaches your phone, your carrier looks up the calling number in a caller ID name database and shows what’s filed there. The name is set by the caller’s phone company, usually from the account holder’s details, and is limited to 15 characters. That’s why you see things like “SMITH JOHN” or “ACME PLUMBING INC”.

Why your phone shows something different

Your phone may show a name from your own contacts, from a spam-blocking app, or nothing at all if your carrier doesn’t pay for name lookups on your plan. Our lookup shows the name on file for the number itself, which is the same source most carriers use.

Names that can change

When a number changes hands, its caller ID name is updated by the new owner’s carrier, but not always right away. Treat the name as a strong hint, not proof of identity.

Questions

Is caller ID name the same as CNAM?

Yes. CNAM (Caller ID Name) is the industry name for the database entry that holds the name shown on caller ID.

Can I change my own caller ID name?

For a landline or business line, ask your phone company. Most mobile carriers set it from the account holder’s name, and some let you change it in your account.

Why is the name all capitals?

Caller ID databases store names in capitals and often last name first, because of how the original telephone systems worked.

Does a lookup cost anything?

Three a day are free. Members get 100 (Basic) or 1,000 (Platinum) a month, then 5¢ each.
