How CNAM works

Caller ID sends only the calling number. The name you see is added by the receiving carrier, which “dips” a CNAM database with that number and gets back up to 15 characters. Each number’s name is stored by its own carrier, and the receiving carrier pays a small fee for each dip, which is why some cheaper plans don’t show names.

Why CNAM is often blank on cell phones

Mobile carriers don’t always publish their customers’ names to CNAM databases, for privacy. So a lookup of a cell number often returns no name, or a generic one like “WIRELESS CALLER”. Landlines and business numbers almost always have a name.

CNAM for your own app

Developers can run the same caller name lookup from code, 5¢ a lookup that finds a name and free when it doesn’t. See the caller ID and carrier API.
