Why the area code doesn’t tell you the carrier

Since number portability, people keep their number when they switch companies. A number first issued by one carrier may be with a different one today. Our lookup checks the number’s current carrier at the moment you ask, so you see who actually serves it now.

When knowing the carrier helps

  • Sending texts: email-to-text gateways and some messaging tools need the recipient’s carrier.
  • Sorting a list: businesses check carriers to find landlines that can’t receive texts.
  • Spotting fraud: a “bank” calling from a small VoIP provider is a red flag.

Questions

Does it show if a number was ported?

It shows the carrier serving the number today, which already reflects any move between companies. It doesn’t list the number’s history.

What carriers can it show?

Any U.S. carrier: the big mobile networks, cable and local phone companies, and VoIP providers.

Why does it say a carrier I’ve never heard of?

Many prepaid and discount brands run on another company’s network, and many business and VoIP numbers belong to wholesale carriers. The lookup shows the company the number is registered with.

Is the carrier lookup free?

Yes, three lookups a day, each with the carrier, line type and caller ID name together.
