Why line type matters
- Texting: landlines can’t receive regular texts, so a message to one is lost.
- Calling rules: U.S. rules (the TCPA) treat autodialed calls and texts to cell phones more strictly than calls to landlines.
- Trust: a “local business” that turns out to be a mobile or VoIP line may not be what it says.
What each answer means
- Mobile: a cell phone on a wireless network.
- Landline: a traditional or cable phone line at a fixed address.
- VoIP: an internet phone line (Google Voice, business phone apps and many robocall services).
- Toll-free: 800, 888, 877 and similar, paid for by the business that owns them.

Questions
Can a landline number become a cell phone?
Yes. People can move a landline number to a mobile carrier and the line type changes. The lookup shows what the line is today.
Is VoIP a cell phone?
No. VoIP runs over the internet. Some VoIP numbers ring on a smartphone app, but they’re registered as VoIP, not mobile.
Can I check a list of numbers?
Three a day are free here. For lists, the carrier lookup API checks each number’s line type.
