What the lookup tells you

We don’t keep a list of “spam numbers” (spammers rotate through thousands of them). What we can show is what the phone network has on file: whether the number is in service, its line type, its carrier and its caller ID name. Spam calls tend to share a pattern: VoIP lines, no name, a spoofed local-looking number, or a number that isn’t in service at all.

Signs of a spam or scam call

  • The number looks like yours (same area code and first digits). That’s called neighbor spoofing.
  • A recorded voice, or a pause before anyone talks.
  • Pressure: a warrant, a frozen account, a missed package, a prize.
  • A request to pay with gift cards, crypto or a wire transfer.

How to stop and report them

  • Add your number to the National Do Not Call Registry at donotcall.gov. Real telemarketers must respect it.
  • Report scam calls to the FTC at reportfraud.ftc.gov.
  • Forward spam texts to 7726 (SPAM) to report them to your carrier.
  • Turn on your carrier’s free call filtering and your phone’s silence-unknown-callers setting.

Questions

Can you tell me for sure if it’s spam?

No lookup can be certain, because spammers borrow real people’s numbers. The line type, carrier and caller ID name help you judge, along with the signs above.

The lookup shows a real person’s name. Is it safe?

Maybe, but scammers can spoof a real person’s number. If the call asks for money or personal details, hang up and contact the person or company another way.

Does looking it up tell the spammer anything?

No. A lookup never contacts the number.
